Tried everything to “fix” your little one’s sleep?

You’ve tried EVERYTHING right!?!

You’ve spent hours googling!

You’ve tried to be really consistent!

You’ve tried to the routines!!

AND N O T H I N G seems to stick!

This is a really common frustration that parents come to me with before working together! And I love it…..Because hey, why hire me as your sleep consultant if I can’t actually help you!

Let me share with you the 3 most common things I see with these clients that gets in the way achieving the goal of good sleep!

1. THE ROUTINE ISN’T RIGHT FOR THEM

It can be tricky when you are stuck in a bit of a vicious cycle of naps and night sleep. Your little one may be in need of dropping a nap and as a result they are early rising making it tricky to drop the nap and still make it through the day (without going to bed at a ridiculously early time). You might also be in a short nap cycle with short awake windows. Here we need a transition plan - how to gradually get onto the routine that is right for your little ones sleep needs, some changes might be quick others might need to be built up to. How well your little one is able to settle and sleep can be highly determined by having the right drive to sleep.

2. THE SETTLING METHOD ISN’T WORKING ANYMORE

This might be not working for you or for your little one but if it doesn’t work for either one of you it is time for a change. The biggest kicker here is making sure you are using an approach that is right for you and your baby and you are confident in how to go about it. It would be a HUGE adjustment for your little one to shift from always being fed to sleep to being put in the cot with no assistance, so we need to be empathetic to their situation and help you to be the confident support person your little one needs to make a change. If you have followed me or been in my sleep world you will know CIO is NOT my thing in any way shape or form.

3. YOUR LITTLE ONE IS GETTING MIXED MESSAGES

You might be swapping and changing approaches too much that it’s gotten a bit confusing! Sometimes you feed straight away, or you attempt settling for 30 minutes then feed to sleep. Sometimes your bedtime routine is really calm other times your little one is able to sense your frustration and tenseness in your body. None of these this are wrong but when you don’t have a clear plan that is right to not only support you to make the changes you need but also give you confidence that the hard yards are going to result in positive results it can feel like you are stuck in a whirlwind of sleep deprivation. This allows you to effectively co-regulate with your little when they are having a tough time.

Finally, you are sometimes just too close to the situation to be able to look at it all objectively (amazing if you can) but sleep deprivation also brings heightened emotions and desperation for the change to stick.
